Departure guide

Umrah from the United States

The part of the journey that happens before you reach Saudi Arabia, and that a guide written for everyone cannot answer: which airport is actually worth departing from, what the flight costs you in hours, and the specific things that catch out American pilgrims.

Which airport to depart from

  • New York JFK — the densest non-stop capacity to Jeddah from North America
  • Washington Dulles (IAD) — non-stop service and the easiest connection point for the mid-Atlantic
  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD) — non-stop service serving the Midwest without a coastal connection
  • Los Angeles and Houston — no non-stop; expect a Gulf or European connection and a very long day

Flight time

About 12 to 13 hours non-stop from the East Coast; 18 to 22 hours door to door from the West Coast with a connection

The visa route, and where to check it

Usually the tourist eVisa

US passport holders normally use the Saudi tourist eVisa, obtained online. Requirements and validity change between seasons — confirm on the official portal before booking anything non-refundable.

Both plain links to the official sources. We earn nothing from either, and we do not restate visa rules here because they change and we cannot verify them for your passport.

What catches out pilgrims travelling from here

  • A twelve-hour flight lands you in Jeddah with a body clock eight hours out. Booking the rail leg to Makkah rather than a car is the difference between arriving able to pray and arriving needing to sleep.
  • Entering ihram before the miqat is announced matters more on an ultra-long-haul flight, where you have been asleep and the announcement may come while you are. Change before you board if you intend to.
  • US mobile plans with "free international roaming" throttle data to speeds that make Nusuk and maps unusable in a crowd. Read the connectivity section before relying on one.

Once you have the flight

Work out where to stay from the walking-distance table rather than from a search sorted by “distance from centre”, and check the season calendar before fixing your dates.
