Departure guide

Umrah from the United Kingdom

The part of the journey that happens before you reach Saudi Arabia, and that a guide written for everyone cannot answer: which airport is actually worth departing from, what the flight costs you in hours, and the specific things that catch out British pilgrims.

Which airport to depart from

  • London Heathrow (LHR) — the widest choice of carriers and the only UK airport with a realistic same-day connection to either Saudi city
  • Manchester (MAN) — direct services that save northern travellers a five-hour rail leg to Heathrow before a seven-hour flight
  • Birmingham (BHX) — seasonal and charter capacity, heaviest in Ramadan, and worth checking before defaulting to Heathrow

Flight time

Roughly 6 to 7 hours non-stop to Jeddah; add two to three hours for a Gulf connection

The visa route, and where to check it

Usually the tourist eVisa

British passport holders normally travel on the Saudi tourist eVisa, applied for online before departure, and Umrah can be performed on it. The eligibility list, the fee and the validity all change — check the official portal for your passport rather than any summary, including this one.

Both plain links to the official sources. We earn nothing from either, and we do not restate visa rules here because they change and we cannot verify them for your passport.

What catches out pilgrims travelling from here

  • A Manchester or Birmingham departure is often cheaper than Heathrow once you price the domestic leg and a night before an early flight, and the totals are rarely compared.
  • Flying into Jeddah and home from Madinah costs little more than a return to one airport and removes an entire intercity journey at the end of a tiring trip. Most UK agents quote the return by default.
  • School holidays here overlap Ramadan differently each year as the Hijri calendar drifts. Check the season calendar before assuming a February half-term is a quiet week in Makkah.

Once you have the flight

Work out where to stay from the walking-distance table rather than from a search sorted by “distance from centre”, and check the season calendar before fixing your dates.
